Demystifying Generative AI: Understanding the Basics
Media Junction- Generative AI
- March 26, 2024
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are not new concepts, but it wasn’t long ago that they were considered pet projects for tech aficionados. However, 2022 marked a pivotal moment when consumer-grade AI products not only captured our imagination but insisted they were here to stay.
But why the sudden shift?
Products like ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Jasper weren't just iterations of AI; they were groundbreaking examples of generative AI.
For years, AI tools primarily focused on interpreting and analyzing data—think voice assistants understanding commands or recommendation algorithms curating your streaming playlist.
These systems excelled at pattern recognition and making predictions based on historical data. However, generative AI flipped the script by not just understanding or predicting but creating.
Generative AI harnesses the power of algorithms to produce content—whether it be text, images, music, or even code—that is not only new but often indistinguishable from that created by humans. This represents a monumental leap from traditional AI's capabilities, moving from passive analysis to active creation.
The implications for businesses and creative industries are vast, offering unprecedented opportunities for personalized content, automated design, and innovative solutions to age-old problems.
Media Junction has been at the forefront of technological developments, including generative AI, for over two decades. We’re committed to helping businesses understand how they can (and should) be leveraging these tools to help reach and engage customers and power growth.
In this article, we're peeling back the layers of generative AI. From its fundamentals to its vast potential for business applications, we're here to guide you through understanding and harnessing this technology to not just keep pace with change but to lead the charge.
Let's dive into the world of generative AI, unravel its mysteries, and explore its boundless possibilities for businesses together.
What Exactly is Generative AI?
Let's talk about "AI"—those powerful tech tools that sift through mountains of data to spot patterns and make educated guesses about the future. Typically, the creations of these digital minds might give away their artificial origins through less-than-perfect outputs or quirky, unnatural details.
However, generative AI breaks the mold, standing out from its AI and machine learning kin. Its algorithms are crafted with such finesse that they produce outputs—be it text, visuals, videos, you name it—that are convincingly real, original, and fresh.
But here’s a twist: despite the new name, generative AI is not substantially different from earlier forms of AI. Instead, it’s the next evolution in the long history of AI.
TechTarget’s explainer on generative AI dates the earliest similar technology in 1932, with a “mechanical brain” that could translate between languages. According to MIT, the earliest example of something that can be called generative AI was the Markov chain, which was developed way back in 1906.
In essence, generative AI is the natural progression of AI's evolution, refining and building upon the groundwork laid by its predecessors to unlock new realms of possibility.
How Does Generative AI Work?
At its best, generative AI works by processing information similarly to how a human brain would (i.e., practicing “general intelligence”), just with much larger volumes and much faster speed.
Imagine generative AI as a highly advanced artist, capable of creating masterpieces at an astonishing pace and scale.
For the sake of simplicity, the process can be broken down into three basic steps:
- Building – Developers build neural networks (think supercharged spreadsheets or matrices) to capture and process information with a series of complex algorithms.
- Training – Models are given enormous datasets to process and tested in increasingly challenging ways, ramping up the depth and complexity of predictions and outputs.
- Querying – End users can enter prompts (questions in plain, clear language) to receive outputs in select formats like conversational text, code, images, or even video content.
There are several complicated mechanics under the hood that make these steps work.
Per NVIDIA’s useful breakdown of generative AI, some of the most important elements are generative adversarial networks (GANs), which pit source data against generated outputs to determine which is real; variational autoencoders (VAEs), which translate information into condensed strings of code; and denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPMs), which (counter-intuitively) introduce noise in order to sharpen fidelity and accuracy by removing it.
For individual and business users, the most important part of all this is the querying.
Generative AI’s Impact on Businesses
After their initial launch in late 2022, generative AI tools had immediate impacts on businesses across every industry in 2023. Per McKinsey’s landmark study on generative AI’s breakout year, about 33% of companies reported already using these tools for at least one business function.
What’s more, about 40% of companies are planning on increasing their investment in AI overall because of the potential of generative AI. And it’s likely to pay off, as McKinsey research into generative AI’s promise projects that the technology could power revenue growth as high as $460B per year in select industries as it adds up to $4.4T to the global economy annually.
Spotlight: Generative AI and Inbound Marketing
One impact of generative AI that we’re particularly attuned to is inbound marketing, especially establishing a strong web presence. The most obvious use case is using tools like ChatGPT to generate content outright, but forward-thinking businesses can also put it to use in other ways:
- Generative AI facilitates research, empowering subject-matter expertise
- AI models can be used to improve drafts in terms of clarity, flow, and tone
- ML can improve search engine optimization (SEO) with keyword integration
- Well-trained models can suggest and improve outlines and article structure
These are just some of the reasons marketers should already be using generative AI.
Potential Downsides and Other Considerations
Despite the benefits AI can (and does) bring businesses, we’d be remiss to avoid talking about the potential complications it can create. There are things humans are simply better equipped to do—empathize, abstract, and relate to readers—that many models cannot do well yet, if at all.
Generative AI needs to be monitored closely to ensure it doesn’t alienate customer bases.
At the macro level, there are concerns about the societal impacts it can have.
Per Reuters’ overview of generative AI’s impacts in 2023, experts have uncovered potential biases related to generative AI, which can be especially problematic in fields like recruitment. And, as generative AI becomes more effective, its capacity to replace human workers will only be more apparent.
A careful, measured approach is the best way to navigate these challenges of generative AI.
